SFA Students Save Lives in Challenge Against SHSU
The annual Stephen F. Austin vs. Sam Houston Homecoming blood drive,
a friendly battle between the two state universities to encourage
blood donations, took place Oct. 23. With the theme of “Bleed Purple,”
it followed up on last year’s success with another huge success.
Lynne Booker, account representative for The Blood Center
East Texas, said the competition between the universities is what
makes this drive fun, exciting and a major life-saving event each

‘Thanks for Giving,’ East Texas blood donors
East Texas blood donors are saving lives and helping the hungry this month. The Blood Center East Texas’ “Thanks for Giving” promotion, which spans the entire month of November, has generated at least 10 bags of food for Harvest House. Details >>
A winning donation!
What was just a regular platelet donation for Commit for Life donor Ray Smith turned into a winning play – as he was randomly selected to win a football autographed by Houston Texans players. Smith’s win came as part of the Houston Texans blood drive, in which one donor was randomly selected from each Neighborhood Donor Center to receive an autographed football. Details >>

ANNUAL ‘BATTLE OF THE BADGES’ HELPS SAVE LIVES
The annual “Battle of the Badges” between Nacogdoches’ police and fire departments resulted in a big win for patients in need of life-saving blood donations. The two organizations, which engaged in a friendly competition to see which could help save the most lives, brought in a total of 87 blood donations for The Blood Center East Texas – enough to save up to 261 lives. MEMORIAL HEALTH SYSTEM HOSTS HOLIDAY BLOOD DRIVE WITH THE BLOOD CENTER EAST TEXAS ON THURSDAY, DECEMBER 28
Memorial Health System will host a holiday blood drive with The Blood Center East Texas on Thursday, December 28 from 11 am to 6 pm in the Community Classroom on the first floor of the hospital. Huntington State Bank had the highest employee participation in the Annual Bank Challenge Blood Drive for 2006. The bank has consistently won this category each year with the dedication of their employees in helping The Blood Center East Texas maintain the blood supply for area hospitals. East Texas Donor wins iPod Nano
The Blood Center East Texas is pleased to congratulate Tom
Davis, winner of the East Texas iPod Challenge giveaway. Individuals
who donated or attempted to donate between May 30 and June
30 were automatically entered in a drawing to win a 4GB iPod
Nano, which stores up to 1,000 songs and features a color
display. The iPod Challenge was a way to thank our donors
and encourage more individuals to Commit for Life.

Livingston Area Supports Commit
for Life Programs
Since the rollout of the Commit for Life program in November
2003, Livingston-area residents have stepped up to help save
lives. To reach the gold level, Commit for Life groups are
asked to host four blood drives a year, allow The Blood Center
to contact them and spread the word. Several
area businesses, schools and churches have taken this pledge
to heart, hosting regular blood drives and producing amazing

As part of its ongoing efforts to support today’s youth, The Blood Center - East Texas recently awarded $2,000 scholarships to two outstanding high school students. These students, whose high schools host blood drives, each submitted an essay answering the question, “What strategies could be used to get high school students more involved in contributing to The Power of Life?” This year’s winners are Mary Richardson of Livingston High School and Terry Stone of Huntington High School. The City of Nacogdoches held a recent blood drive creating a "Guns and Hoses" competition between the Fire and Police Department. The Fire Department walked away with bragging rights for the most donors. The drive helped to save or sustain the lives of 39 patients in East Texas hospitals. Nacogdoches Memorial Hospital saw 85 donors during their September Blood Drive. The great turn out is a result of their dedicated chair person, Marilyn Wright and the hospital administrator, Tim Hayward. The hospital offers a day off to ten employees that attempt to donate blood and gives all attempting donors a free lunch in the cafeteria. Who said "there's no free lunch"?
