SFA Students Save Lives in Challenge Against SHSU
![]() |
The annual Stephen F. Austin vs. Sam Houston Homecoming blood drive,
a friendly battle between the two state universities to encourage blood
donations, took place Oct. 23. With the theme of “Bleed Purple,” it
followed up on last year’s success with another huge success.
Lynne Booker, account representative for The Blood Center East
Texas, said the competition between the universities is what makes this
drive fun, exciting and a major life-saving event each year.
“Almost 100 SFA students stepped forward to give blood that day,” said
Booker. “The students and organizations really worked hard to
try to beat Sam Houston, one of their greatest rivals.”
Sam Houston won the blood challenge this year, and Booker said
although SFA was disappointed, they know the real winners are recipients
at area hospitals.
Lelia Davis, student volunteer coordinator for the blood drive, helped promote the event, which involved 100 organizations on campus. The organization recruiting the most donors was awarded a traveling trophy.
“We are so proud of the German Club, a brand new group on campus, for winning the trophy,” said Davis. “They took the lead and recruited almost one-third of the donors!”
Congratulations to all for saving lives in the East Texas area.
