Real World Educational Workshop High School Event
Posted on November 1
More than 60 high school blood drive volunteers representing 7 schools from across the East Texas region gathered recently for The Blood Center East Texas' first Real World educational workshop. The event, held on the Stephen F. Austin State University campus, was designed to teach teens how to help save lives by conducting successful high school blood drives.
The event included a Power of Life break-out session, in which students from different schools teamed up to brainstorm ideas that could benefit their school blood drives; a presentation by Dr. Beth Hartwell, medical director of Gulf Coast Regional Blood Center; and a testimonial by Monica Smith, who is a double amptee as a result of an auto accident two weeks before her high school graduation. Monica credits blood donations for helping to save her life and said a personal 'Thank You' to all the school representatives for hosting blood drives and to those that had personally donated blood.

16-Year-Olds Eligible to Donate
Posted on November 1
Gulf Coast Regional Blood Center is taking another
monumental step to help increase the blood supply in our region.
As of Tuesday, May 1, The Blood Center will be accepting whole
blood donations from 16-year-old donors with their parents’ consent
(see below for forms). By becoming a blood donor, 16-year-olds
are showing great civic responsibility, maturity and a sense
of community pride by saving up to three lives with one donation.
To be eligible, individuals who are 16 years old, 122 pounds,
are in general good health and receive permission from their
parents or guardian can donate blood. At this time, donations
from 16-year-old donors are limited to only whole blood donations.
Of course, individuals who are at least 17 years old, 110 pounds
and in general good health also can donate.
Please Commit for Life by donating at least once every quarter,
and spread the word letting your friends and family members know
about this new opportunity.
